Wavelength assignment to minimize requirement on tunable range of optical transceivers in WDM networks

چکیده
In this paper we consider WDM networks with a tunable transmitter and a fixed-wavelength receiver at each station (similar results hold when the transmitter is fixed and the receiver is tunable). Traditionally, each station is required to be able to access all wavelength channels used in the network. Such requirement limits the number of wavelengths that can be exploited in a WDM network up to the size of the resolvable wavelength set of optical transceivers, which is very limited with current technology. In this paper we observe that this requirement is actually an overkill. To realize a communication topology, physical or logical, it is sufficient that the tunable range of the transmitter at each station covers all the wavelengths of the receivers at its neighboring stations. This observation leads to the study of optimal wavelength assignment to minimize the tunability requirement while still guaranteeing that each receiver has a unique wavelength channel. This optimization problem is shown to NP-complete in general and approximation algorithms with provable performance guarantees are presented. When the communication topologies are complete graphs, de Bruijin digraphs, Kautz digraphs, shuffle or rings, the optimal solutions are provided. Finally, we present tight lower bounds when the communication topology is a hypercube. q 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Efficient routing and wavelength assignment for reconfigurable WDM networks
Through the use of configurable wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) technology including tunable optical transceivers and frequency selective switches, next-generation WDM networks will allow multiple virtual topologies to be dynamically established on a given physical topology. For node port networks, we determine the number of wavelengths required to support all possible virtual topologies...
متن کاملA Novel Protection Guaranteed, Quality of Transmission Aware Routing and Wavelength Assignment Algorithm for All-optical Networks
Transparent All Optical Networks carry huge traffic and any link failure can cause the loss of gigabits of data; hence protection and its guarantee becomes necessary at the time of failure. Many protection schemes were presented in the literature, but none of them speaks about protection guarantee. Also, in all optical networks, due to absence of regeneration capabilities, the physical layer i...
متن کاملA Scalable Wavelength Assignment Algorithm Using Minimal Number of Wavelength Converters in Resilient WDM Networks
Careful wavelength assignment (WA) to support lambda services is necessary to reduce the total number of wavelength converters (WCs), which are required every time the wavelength continuity constraint cannot be met in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks. With the successful introduction of reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs) and related technologies, WDM networks a...
متن کاملRecon®guration and Dynamic Load Balancing in Broadcast WDM Networks*
In optical WDM networks, an assignment of transceivers to channels implies an allocation of the bandwidth to the various network nodes. Intuition suggests, and our recent study has con®rmed, that if the traf®c load is not well balanced across the available channels, the result is poor network performance. Hence, the time-varying conditions expected in this type of environment call for mechanism...
متن کاملA new look at dynamic traffic scheduling in WDM networks with transceiver tuning latency
A key feature of optical wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) networks is the inherently high degree of configurability available in the presence of tunable transceivers. More specifically, the flexibility of WDM networks lies in the ability to admit a large number of logical interconnections of nodes within the network. Indeed, this is a feature that distinguishes optical networks and drives ...
